    Welcome back, smart tanners! This week’s blog is all about breaking it down to the single most important molecule to all living organisms… Water! Thanks to a quick Google search, you can easily find out that water is “a colorless, transparent, odorless, tasteless liquid that forms the seas, lakes, rivers, and rain and is the basis of the fluids of living organisms”, if you didn’t already know…

    You can also find out that health authorities commonly recommend we each consume eight 8-ounce glasses (about 2 liters) a day, also known as the 8×8 rule—easy to remember, yet not so easy to follow.

    Today we’re talking how important water is for your SKIN, because we are all about healthy, glowy skin. The bottom line is that skin is an organ, and just like any other part of your body, your skin is made up of cells. Like any other cell in the body, your skin cells are made up of water.

    When your skin is lacking the sufficient amount of water, it will turn dry, tight, and flaky (thus causing your tan to fade as your skin cells flake off). The resilience weakens and your skin is more prone to wrinkling (yikes!).

    As you go about your day, you lose large quantities of water (be it through urination, sweating, etc.), which needs to be replaced somehow. Unfortunately, water that you consume through drinking will reach all of your other organs first, before reaching your skin. So the importance to applying water to our skin and keeping it there is GREAT. Not only will keeping skin hydrated show a visible difference—radiant, healthy, glowy skin—it can help prevent wrinkles as well (and who doesn’t want that…)!

    Here are a few of the best ways to add water to your skin:

    • After you step out of the bath or shower, your skin is still porous and vulnerable to products. So applying a hydrating moisturizer within 2 minutes of hopping out will allow for better absorption.
    • Apply a product like Skinceuticals Hydrating B5 Gel (which can be picked up at Jeune Skin Care) to your skin prior to your moisturizer, as this contains hyaluronic acid, which holds 1,000 times its own weight in water, thus attracting water to the skin and holding it there.
    • The obvious, ever-painful suggestion to drink more water. Drinking the “prescribed” 8 glasses a day will allow the body and skin to get rid of toxins. Many people, with and without acne, have reported that their increase of water intake results in a more radiant glow.
    • Apply quality tanning lotion prior to tanning to keep skin hydrated while under the beating UV rays of the sun/bed. Dry skin reflects up to 50% of the sun’s rays that reach it—don’t waste your sun time!

    Disclaimer: none of these suggestions will give you that desired Beyoncé glow overnight. But by holding yourself accountable to those 2 liters a day for a good couple of weeks, you should see the affects of the hydration on your skin and feel more beautiful than ever.

    So you’ve built your tan but want it to last (because who doesn’t?)… Lucky for you, I have a few helpful tricks for a long lasting bronze that will keep you glowing all year long. Let’s begin!

    Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!

    We know that a tan is developed as a protection mechanism to maintain healthy skin through the stimulation of the melanocytes in our skin by the sun, duh! But because the melanin colors the top layer of skin, which is shed approximately every two weeks, it’s best to keep a regular exfoliation schedule to ensure all your skin cells are at the very start of their cycle. I exfoliate with a loofa every time I shower and always have a smooth, even tan!

    H20, water, aqua!

    Your body is 60% water… 40% everything else. Most people don’t even realize they’re dehydrated. Dehydration is the quickest way to lose your tan! Why? Because when your skin cells dry out they will shed much sooner than the average two week life span I mentioned earlier. To ensure cell hydration, we need to be feeding them from the inside and the outside.

    This means keeping up your water intake REGULARLY. No, juices don’t cut it, neither do sodas (they dehydrate you even more), and alcohol ESPECIALLY won’t help (for those who don’t realize how dehydrating their Cosmo might be). When you’re out in the sun, your water intake should be boosted by about 50% because you’re losing even more water through sweating.

    MOISTURIZE!

    Hydrating your skin from the inside isn’t enough, you gotta hit it from both the inside AND the outside. When you’re in the sun or during the weeks after you visited that tropical island, it’s recommended to moisturize twice a day. Sure, your daily moisturizer will do the trick, but after-sun creams frequently have additional ingredients that help soothe your skin, such as aloe vera. Others contain tan-enhancing ingredients which will stimulate melanin production to maintain your tan.

    Turkey time?

    You heard me… Turkey! Believe it or not eating certain foods will help to prolong your tan. According to dermatologist Dr. Howard Murad, the ingredient ‘tyrosine’ is the primary raw material that our melanocytes need to produce melanin.

    Foods rich in tyrosine include turkey, egg whites, cottage cheese, salmon, soy, almonds, and avocados. Eating these foods frequently will encourage melanin production, and consequently, a tan!

    There are many ways to approach a healthy tan, from drinking water, to exfoliating, to eating egg whites and avocados! You obviously don’t have to implement all of this tips into your daily routine, but picking up one or two can certainly make a difference.

    Will Tanning Make My Tattoo Fade?

    Welcome, welcome tanners. Today’s blog is intended to catch the attention of our inked tanning friends. First of all, any ink color will fade over time no matter what, and you may need to re-touch it. But this blog is to help protect and prolong the life of your ink when tanning because NO, you don’t have to choose between tattoos and tanning.

    To answer the question, yes, tanning can cause your ink to fade, moreover UV rays, UVA and UVB, accelerate color loss, whether they come from the sun or a tanning bed. The best way to protect your ink is to cover your tattoo area with the highest SPF sunblock available prior to hopping in the tanning bed. You can apply the sunblock with a cotton swab in order to completely cover the outline of the tattoo (as to avoid a border around the design). You can also try covering your tattoo with a piece of fabric the size and shape of your tattoo to block as much UV as possible.

    A big part of caring for your tattoo (and skin in general) is moisturizing. I don’t care what color your skin is or what sex organs you got, all of our skin needs to be moisturized to not only be healthy, but to maintain a beautiful bronze AND a vibrant tattoo. If you don’t regularly moisturize, especially after a tanning session or shower—the two activities that dry out your skin the most, your skin can feel dry and itchy or become flaky. Moisturizing will prevent the loss of bits of skin that will slowly strip the ink out of your tattoo… See the importance?

    Lastly, the best tattoo tip anyone will give you is to avoid sun exposure to a brand new tattoo. Though this is quite obvious, better safe than sorry to over emphasize it. You should always follow the aftercare instructions given by your tattoo artist and never expose your unhealed tattoo to natural or artificial UV light.
